PES strongly condemns detentions of Belarusian opposition leaders Mikalai Statkevich and Andrei Sannikov
Andrei Sannikov, Belarus opposition leader (flashes the V-sign for victory)

(26 May 2011, Brussels) The PES strongly condemns the arrests of Andrei Sannikov and Mikalai Statkevich. On 14 May 2011, Mr Sannikov, who was the main rival in disputed 2010 re-election of Belarusian President Lukashenka, was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of organizing mass disturbances. Sannikov came in second to Lukashenka in the 19 December 2010 polls, which the opposition and the OECD have described as severely flawed.

More and more people in Europe are unemployed and even protesting on the street. And yet financial magazines and newspapers talk about a ‘return to growth’. This dissonance between market fantasy and human reality is embarrassing.
