Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba

Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba

Born in Solares in 1951. He studied Chemistry (Specialty in Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry) in the Complutense University of Madrid, in which he also got his PhD in 1978 with Extraordinary Prize. He is professor of the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Complutense University, and has worked in the past as professor at the University of Konstanz (Germany) and Montpellier (France). In 1986 he was appointed Secretary-General of Education and two years later Secretary of State of Education. In 1992 he became Minister of Education and Science in the Government of Felipe González. From 1993 until 1996 he was Minister of the Presidency. He has been Member of the Parliament (Congreso de los Diputados) since 1993, where he was leader of the Socialist Group from 2004 to 2006. In that year he was appointed Minister of Interior in the Government of J.L. Rodríguez Zapatero, position held until 2011 when he was also appointed 1st Vice-Prime Minister (Vicepresidente). He is Secretary General of PSOE since the 38th Congress, held in Seville on February 2012, and he is also the current President of the Socialist Group in the Spanish Parliament.
