Algirdas Butkevicius

Algirdas Butkevicius

Algirdas Butkevicius was born in Paežeriai, Lithuania, on 19 November 1958. He graduated from the Vilnius Engineering Construction Institute as an economist of construction. From 1982 to 1985 he worked as a construction work superintendent in Vilkaviškis region and later as an architect for the Vilkaviškis Executive Committee. In 1990 he was elected deputy to the Municipal Council of Vilkaviškis region and the next year he became deputy manager of Vilkaviškis region. Algirdas Butkevicius joined the Lithuanian Social Democratic (LSDP) party in 1992; member of the party’s Presidium, he became Chairman of the Party for Vilkaviškis department in 1995. From 1996 he served as Member of Lithuanian Parliament Seimas. Algirdas Butkevicius participated in the Lithuanian government as Finance Minister (2004-2005) and Transport and Communication Minister (2006-2008). He was elected Chairman of LSDP in March 2009.
