Economy and finance

The PES is committed to developing a strong partnership with progressive forces all over the American continent.

North America

In the wake of the economic crisis, the PES joined Europeans for Financial Reform (EFFR), a coalition of NGOs, foundations and civil society actors that demand a stronger regulation of financial markets. In order to push for such a regulation world-wide, EFFR cooperates with its US partner Americans for Financial Reform.

The PES also maintains regular contact with US Democrats and over the years we have worked together in the fields of Nuclear nonproliferation, climate change and globalization. Former US President Bill Clinton was one of the key speakers in the 3rd World Conference of the Global Progressive Forum (GPF, a common initiative by the PES, the Socialists & Democrats group in the European Parliament and the Foundation for European Progressive Studies to address the negative aspects of globalization).

Latin America

Latin America’s political weight on the international stage is growing.
With a considerable number of left-wing governments, the emerging countries on Central and Southern America represent an important progressive force in a global world which is rapidly changing.

The PES is strengthening the dialogue with Latin America’s left governments and parties, focusing on sustainable growth, decent jobs, climate change and taming the financial markets.

At the same time, the PES is pushing for a stronger EU-Latin America cooperation.

Moreover, the PES believes that regional integration has to be prioritized even when taking into account the diversity of the whole region.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) President Sergei Stanishev offered today its warm congratulations to Dilma Vana Rousseff for her re-election for a second term as President of Brazil. Ms Rousseff, who has been in power since 2010, was re-elected yesterday with 51.6% of the vote.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) is pleased to celebrate today the inauguration of Chile's new Social Democratic President, Michelle Bachelet. Vice-President Jan Royall and Deputy Secretary General Marije Laffeber are in Chile to represent the PES.
