Candidate for PES President: Enrique Barón

Joining forces for a progressive Europe

I present my candidacy for the Presidency of the Party of European Socialists (PES) with the aim of gaining a wide consensus and serving the interests of our sister parties, defending our common values and regaining the trust of our citizens.

I have been involved in European politics throughout my career; I’ve spent over twenty years at the European Parliament, served as its President (1989-1992) and chaired the Socialist Group in the European Parliament (1999-2004).

I am now ready to give a new impetus to our progressive force. The moment has come to strengthen our efforts in building a strong party, able to decisively shape the future of the EU. We must continue to work on our agenda for a comprehensive and coordinated economy strategy of recovery for more, better and fairer jobs – especially for the young – for substantial progress on gender equality, for a policy of cohesion combating inequality, to strengthen the fight against tax evasion and corruption, for leadership on combating climatic change, and for a major role and strong voice on world issues.

I therefore propose 10 pledges as a starting point to an ongoing process that is the regeneration and reinforcement of the PES, which I would like to enrich and complete on receiving your suggestions, requests and concerns. I want this to be a collaborative and collective project.

This is a decisive time for defining a progressive agenda, for building a democratic Europe. I wish to renew my engagement with our political family and am ready to work with all member parties and organisations to face this challenge and to lead the PES to a new stage of relevance and unity, with the aim of giving European citizens a better life.

Thank you!
