At the 10th PES Congress in Budapest, Sergei Stansihev was re-elected as the PES President for another 2.5 years.

Mr Stanishev stated: "I believe that the PES will only be successful if we remember that our purpose is to change the world for the better, to ensure a dignified life for every individual and to achieve a fair and coherent society. My main goal is to gain peoples’ trust for this vision, and with that trust, to win the 2019 election."

At the PES Presidency on May 29, Sergei Stanishev and Enrique Barón were announced as the two candidates for the position of PES President. Both are experienced politicians at National and European levels, having had careers in both the domestic and European political spheres.

Sergei Stanishev is Bulgarian and was nominated for the role for the role of PES President by the Bulgarian Socialist Party the BSP. He is the incumbent PES President, a position he has held since 2012 (interim since 2011). He was previously the Bulgarian Prime Minister and is currently an MEP. Enrique Barón is Spanish and was nominated for the position of PES President by the Spanish Socialist Party PSOE. He was European Parliament President from 1989 to 1992. Click here to know more about the candidate.
