Sergei Stanishev, PES President has arrived in Turkey to support PES member parties CHP and HDP ahead of the elections on 1 November. He is holding a series of meetings to discuss the upcoming elections. Yesterday, on 22 October, he met with Kemal Kilicdaroglu, Leader of CHP, and Selahattin Demirtas, Leader of the Kurdish party HDP.

Party of European Socialists President Sergei Stanishev reacted to the news of an escalation of violence in Turkey, including an arson attack on the headquarters of PES sister party Halkların Demokratik Partisi (HDP) in Ankara and vandalism by pro-government demonstrators on the newspaper Hurriyet.

Reacting to this morning’s news of a suicide attack on a socialist youth gathering in Suruc in Southern Turkey Sergei Stanishev, Party of European Socialists (PES) President said:

‘The fact that a group of socialist young people in Turkey have been massacred as they prepared to volunteer in Syria, is so abominable that it is beyond belief.'

Yesterday Turkish voters took to the polls to elect a new Parliament. Through massive participation in a peaceful democratic vote, they changed the outlook of the political landscape in Turkey. PES associate party HDP wrote history by surpassing the electoral threshold of ten percent, while CHP obtained the second highest result with 25% of the votes. President Erdogan’s AK Party lost the absolute majority, obtaining 41 % of the vote.

Twelve years after granting candidate status and six years after the start of accession negotiations, EU-Turkey relations are today at a virtual standstill. It is in the interest of Turkey and the EU that this process is reinvigorated. The goal is Turkish membership in the European Union. Accession must be an open-ended process with conditions, yes, but not with political vetoes. The European Socialist family is the political family most committed to EU integration and the enlargement process. Therefore the PES believes that it is crucial to launch a new EU-Turkey Agenda.
