©Joe CatronOn the 25th of March PES President Sergei Stanishev met with Fadwa Barghouti, wife of Marwan Barghouti, renowned Fatah member and Palestinian reconciliation figure. Marwan Barghouti has spent a total of 17 years in prison, of which the last 11 years consecutively. The meeting took place in Amman at the Conference ‘A common vision for a progressive Arab world’ co-organized by the PES on the 24th and 25th of March.


PES Task Force on the Arab Spring

On 19 February the PES held a meeting of its Task Force on the Arab Spring in the PES Headquarters in Brussels. The meeting was an opportunity for progressive parties from both sides of the Mediterranean to meet and discuss the current state of play two years after the revolutions and to develop a common agenda for the upcoming period.

Among the topics discussed were the strengthening of cooperation among progressive forces to respond effectively and in a coordinated way to the common challenges in the region as well as the question of political Islam in the Middle East and North Africa.


The Party of European Socialists welcomes the establishment in Cairo today of the Arab Social Democratic Forum.

The forum was set up on the initiative of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party, the Tunisian Ettakatol Party and Fatah from Palestine.

Palestinians celebrate in Ramallah after the General Assembly voted to recognise Palestine as an observer member state

The Party of Europeans Socialists (PES) warmly welcomes the recognition of Palestine as a “non-member observer state” at the United Nations General Assembly. With 138-9 votes in favour, the endorsement of several European States was pivotal in pushing the bid through at the UN. This approval will boost the peace process, reduce current tensions and put an end to the escalation of violence.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) has shown deep concern about the loss of innocent lives in Gaza and Southern Israel. The ongoing conflict, which has cost thousands of lives in the last years, was renewed and intensified last week by violent episodes on both sides of the border.

On 28 October the Tunisian Ettakatol Party, the Egyptian Social Democratic Party and the Palestinian party Fatah, established the Organization Committee of the “Arab Social Democratic Forum”

The Congress of the Party of European Socialists gave a green light to the membership of two new member parties, Ettakatol of Tunisia and Fatah of Palestine. The move comes at a crucial time in the post-Arab Spring period. It reiterates the commitment of the PES, to North Africa and the Middle East and the calls for hope and dignity and progress.


PES Arab Spring Task Force

On 6 June the PES held a meeting of its Task Force on the Arab Spring in the PES Headquarters in Brussels. The meeting was an opportunity for progressive parties from the region and PES member parties to meet and discuss the current state of play of the revolutions and what our future actions together will be. In attendance was FFS Algeria, ESDP Egypt, USFP Morocco, Fatah Palestine, FDTL Tunisia, PS Belgium, spa Belgium, PS France, PD Italy, PSOE Spain, SAP Sweden, PS Switzerland and LP UK, the European for Democracy and Solidarity and Solidar.

Today in the European Parliament a joint seminar on Constitutional Reform between the PES, S&D GroupGPFFEPS and sister parties from the region Ettakatol (Tunisia) and Fatah (Palestine) was organized.

The seminar was attended by PES PresidentSergei Stanishev and Hannes Swoboda leader of the S&D Group in the European Parliament and tackled very important topics on Constitutional affairs with Members of the European Parliament, member parties from Europe and the region and constitutional experts. Issues such as the separation of powers, ensuring social rights and women's rights in a Constitution, protection of fundamental rights and the role of religion in the Constitution were discussed extensively.
