Hannes Swoboda

Hannes Swoboda was born on 10 November 1946 in Bad Deutsch Altenburg, Austria. He studied Law and Economics in the University of Vienna, having subsequently worked in the Vienna Chamber of Labour.

In 1983 he was elected Member of the Vienna Assembly and Municipal Council, becoming co-coordinator of the Socialist Group to the Assembly and Municipal Council in 1986. He worked as a municipal councilor from 1988 until 1994.

Hannes Swoboda has been a member of the European Parliament since 1996, serving in 15 committees and 11 delegations. In January 2012 he was elected chairman of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament.

Mr. Swoboda is currently a member of the Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) Federal Executive Board and a member of the Vienna SPÖ Executive Board.
