Jānis Urbanovičs

Jānis Urbanovičs

Jānis Urbanovičs was born on March 23, 1959 in Rezekne, Latvia. He graduated from the Latvian Academy of Agriculture as a hydraulic engineer in the early 1980s. During the Perestroika he was active in several youth organizations. In 1993 he was elected to the Saeima (national Parliament) and has been re-elected ever since.

In 1994 Mr. Urbanovičs was one of the founders of the Concord Party, being a member of the party board. In 2005 he became the Chairman of Concord Party.

During the 9th, 10th and 11th Saeima he chaired the Concord Centre parliamentary group. At the parliamentary elections of 2006, 2010 and 2011, he was nominated as a candidate for the position of the Prime Minister by the Concord Centre. 

Jānis Urbanovičs is also the founder of the international non-profit think-tank “The Baltic Forum”.
