PES President says Commission President Barroso could be accused of trying to hide the effects of the economic crisis as Social Communication stripped of key measures

26/09/2013

Sergei Stanishev, President of the Party of European Socialists (PES) today urged Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Commission President to make the  upcoming communication on the social dimension of  Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) part of a ‘radical overhaul’ of EU policy. In an official letter to the Commission head, Mr. Stanishev has stated that the Commission runs the risk of being accused of hiding the effects of the economic crisis.

The letter is a reaction to news that the communication has been stripped of key measures. For example, the idea of having a European-wide ‘scoreboard’ of key socio-economic indicators, has been blocked within the Commission, sources say, due to sustained pressure from more politically conservative Commissioners.

“We desperately need, as a minimum, a comprehensive, EU-wide Social and Employment Scoreboard”, the letter states, outlining that the scoreboard would highlight divergences between Member States, and help in developing the right policy responses.

Speaking from Sofia, Mr. Stanishev said that; “We need to acknowledge the severe social problems that millions face every day. Only when these consequences of the crisis have been faced, can we really say that we are on the road to recovery”.

The Communication has been provisionally scheduled for 2 October but may be rescheduled to 9 October.
