The 23rd June 2016 is, and will remain, a political earthquake in the EU’s history. For the first time, after decades of widening the Union, a Member State made the choice to leave. Brexit has happened.

The PES reacted immediately stating that it is important that the British Government activates article 50 and starts the withdrawal in the swiftest possible way. It was stated that a delay in the leaving procedures may leave the door open for all nationalists and populists in Europe.

PES Foreign and European Affairs Ministers issued a declaration on Brexit, calling for swift action on the very morning of the results.

PES President Sergei Stanishev wrote an open letter to all Prime Ministers, Heads of State and Party Leaders of entire PES Family.
The PES EU Council Preparation meeting on the 28 of June was focused on Brexit and confirmed again the position of the socialists and Democrats that we should act more for achieving fair and just Social Europe.

“We must come to a settlement with the UK as quickly as possible so that we can focus on the many challenges the EU faces - fostering sustainable growth, creating jobs and solving the migration challenges. We must address those to give a decent future to young Europeans,” said PES President Sergei Stanishev at the pre-council meeting.
