PES welcomes Fatah-Hamas unity government

After seven years of rivalry, a Palestinian unity government was sworn in on Monday June 2nd. During the ceremony, President Abbas said that the new government would ‘follow the priorities and principles of the previous agreements, including building Palestinian civil society institutions, accountability, rule of law, as well as respecting international law.’

He also stated that the government is committed to a two state solution along the 1967 borders, the recognition of the state of Israel and the honoring of existing agreements, including the Quartet principles.

‘We support the reconciliation process between Hamas and Fatah, and we hope for peaceful, transparent and democratic elections’, says PES President Sergei Stanishev, ‘We also welcome the new government’s commitment to the recognition of the State of Israel and the renunciation of violence. All parties involved should now make a genuine effort to create an enabling environment to resume peace talks.’

‘As PES, we strongly condemn all forms of violence targeting civilians, and we hope all parties will abide by this principle. Israelis nor Palestinians should live in a society that is dominated by fear and violence.’
