PES Women at CSW New York; education and employment key for women’s empowerment

Last year on 2 October 2013, I hosted the screening of a truly moving documentary, “The Threshold of the Desert”, in the European Parliament and had the pleasure of meeting the documentary main star Najat Aziz, who shared with us her story of women’s empowerment.

After raising awareness in Europe, together with Vision Films, we will bring the story of Najat Aziz to New York in the context of the Commission on the Status of Women 58thEdition (#CSW58) that started yesterday gathering numerous Governmental and Non-Governmental Organisation from the four corners of the world around the issue of women’s empowerment and rights.

Save the date and join us on 19 March 2014, as we will present the Threshold of the Desert at 6.00 pm in the UN headquarters on the fringe of the 58th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, followed by a debate with high-level international experts from UN Women, Vital Voices, UNDP, OECD, World Bank, etc.

Threshold of the Desert 18-minute documentary, which was selected at the Cannes Film Festival, raises awareness about the capacity of women as engines of development and social change in rural areas of the Arab world. This documentary stars Aziz Najat, a Moroccan woman, who is part of the very limited 15% of women who are economically active in rural areas of Morocco. She crossed the threshold of her house, went out to work to generate resources and streamlined her environment. Her daily struggle for autonomy is an act of self-empowerment within a traditional Islamic society that predominantly confines women's roles and activities to the domestic sphere.

This powerful film sets a role model that is so important to inspire other women to break the barriers and take part in the economy; a perfect example of what UN Women and CSW are putting at the heart of their 58th Session debate and conclusions.
